In praise of "Chief Cook & Bottle-Washer"
"I consider it a distinct honor to have been asked to write a preface to a book that chronicles the life of Wilkie Clark through his daughter's diverse experiences with him. For me, he was a renaissance ANew Black Man who helped construct a community and its people through his visionary words and bold deeds. I watched and learned life-sustaining lessons from him that served me well as I faced the challenges of becoming a man, husband, father, and engaged citizen."

| A multi-dimensional book that --
PROCLAIMS the historical distinction of a southern black man by the name of Wilkie Clark, who during the 20th century, rose to the occasion of racism and economic oppression in Alabama...
HONORS black fathers...
ILLUMINATES the dignified and distinguished role and legacy of black funeral directors all over America....
CHALLENGES a contemporary black community to take its economic destiny into its own hands and "come up" by its own design.
This book takes a serious look at black economics and suggests a way to improve our status in the context of commuities that offer us little or no support.

"I was determined that history was not going to ignore my daddy -- even if I had to write it myself!"
"In my book, I am taking back what the devil tried to steal from him... I am proclaiming the historical distinction that he rightfully earned and deserves by well documenting and establishing his significance in Randolph County, Alabama.
"In "Chief Cook & Bottle-Washer," The Unconquerable Soul Of Wilkie Clark, I celebrate the life of my late father, Wilkie Clark, a strong, steadfast black man whose maturation I witness as I grow in my love and appreciation for all that he is, does, and becomes.
"Written from the perspective of a daughter, infatuated with her father's heroic qualities, the entire book is an exaltation of his extraordinary life and works, wrought while living in the same remote, rural community where I was born and raised in Randolph County, Alabama."

DON'T YOU DARE GIVE UP! You can achieve the "American Dream," even if it has eluded you all your life!
This amazing biography is a true story that traces the life of Wilkie Clark, a black man who flourished in rural Randolph County, Alabama during the early and middle decades of the 20th century.
Lovingly penned by his only daughter, it is the culmination of her year-long effort to establish his historical significance in his local community.
It tells the story of his transformation from that of a dirt poor boy from "Springfield" caught up in the nightmarish throes of racism and bigotry so prevalent throughout the deep south to a "New Black Man" ultimately fulfilling his "American Dream" of business ownership.
As the plot unfolds, his spirit is revealed as a key element of his transformation, which propels him from a life of mediocrity, to one of excellence as a beloved champion for economic and human rights in his community.
| "'Chief Cook & Bottle-Washer' chronicles the life of my father, the late Wilkie Clark, and his inordinate struggles to liberate himself socially and economically against the backdrop of the stubborn, obstinate conditions of racism and bigotry displayed throughout the "old south" in the years during which he came of age here in Randolph County.
"Here, his life is displayed as one of (what could be representative of) any number of black men in this locality, caught up in a rebirth of the "new black man" and who thus began to re-shape their neighborhoods and communities as they learned new ways of thinking and behaving....ways that contradicted anything they had ever been taught before.
On the journey from a rambunctious young black man with an insatiable zeal for life, to a mature citizen of the world, his profound life experiences somehow transform him into a champion for an oppressed people particularly on the local front. At the heart of all he does is the drive to 'serve humanity.'"

The "Wilkie Clark Memorial Foundation" seeks to bring to life, and embody those aspects of his character that resulted in change for the better for individuals, for the neighborhood, and even for the world. Anchored by the philosophy that it is impossible to serve God, without serving man, which is also ratified in God's holy word (i.e. "inasmuch as ye have done it to the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." ) we seek to recreate and resurrect his spirit in the form of an organization that will reach out to help humanity, to lift and make whole, unrestricted by locality or nature of need, beginning at home and spreading abroad. Thus we are truly accorded "a more excellent way to serve humanity." |
